However, the 4-star prestige hotel also features the renowned Island Grill, open from breakfast until 11pm, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Hyde Park.
The adjacent Lounge Bar is famed for an Afternoon Tea service that includes white chocolate and raspberry lollypops, pistachio macaroons, apple and honey cupcakes, seasonal fruit tarts and caramel hazelnut tranches.
The Daily Mail’s Online Travel guide recently featured the Lancaster London among its round up of the best afternoon tea offerings at hotels across the country.
Hotel guests can also enjoy a takeaway in nearby Hyde Park via a hamper offer that also includes the picnic blanket!
In an exercise that has seen the Lancaster London move completely away from its previous supplier of undercounter warewashing equipment, three FV40.2G GiO machines have just been installed.
Two are used in the Lounge Bar, one for glassware, the other for dishes. The third is directly facing the hot beverage station in the busy Island Grill, where it handles a mixed selection of crockery, cutlery and glassware.
All three machines feature Meiko’s GiO Reverse Osmosis water treatment that provides sparkling clean, spot free results and does not require the use of a water softener, saving valuable floor space behind the counter.
There are enormous benefits in using the most technically advanced warewashing machines for customers such as the Lancaster London. GiO has helped improve reliability to such an extent that Meiko UK is the only supplier of warewashing equipment able to offer a “No-Bills” guarantee for either three or five year terms, coupled with rapid response to breakdown support calls (Meiko currently has a first time fix rate upwards of 95%!).
The “No-Bills” guarantee enables customers to fix operating costs with no risk of unexpected or unbudgeted repair bills and Clare Wright FCIPS, Director of Procurement, Lancaster London, commented: “We are delighted with Meiko’s after sales support and it made absolute sense to take up the offer of an extended warranty. Not only does it guarantee we have no risk of any extra bills, it also makes the servicing and maintenance arrangements easier.
“In 2010 and 2011 we replaced our big machines with Meiko and have been delighted with the results. The warewashing operations in the hotel are now all Meiko. We have had no problems, the staff find the machines easy to use and, importantly, they are happy with the results.”
The hotel spent some £6 million in 2010/11 on a refurbishment of the two main function kitchens. These are located on different floors, one above the other and work in tandem to handle anything up to 2,000 covers.
The upgrade focussed on energy saving and key to the back of house refurbishment was a new M-iQ rack transport dishwasher, fitted with reverse osmosis, for use as a glasswasher in the Westbourne kitchen.
Upstairs in the Nine King’s kitchen, a second wide body M-iQ flight dishwasher and a third standard width M-iQ machine, both with integral reverse osmosis, handle the crockery and cutlery. The integral reverse osmosis system has totally negated the need for localised water softening of the final rinse water.
In 2011, the then Director of Back of House Operations Oliver Darwin commented: “The wash quality is spot-on – we don’t need anyone for polishing any more. On the old Meiko machines, we used to have three people polishing; now we just have to check the ware is OK. Up to functions of 350, I now need just one person rather than two to man the machine.
“I also appreciated Meiko providing the statistics for water efficiency and detergent usages, information I needed to provide for our in-house environmental audits and this proved to be invaluable to us with our – ‘walk softly’ – philosophy.”
