Meiko supplies CPCS with M-iQ dishwashing technology

Offenburg/Hong Kong. 75,000 meals a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year – that's the extraordinary pace set by one of the biggest flight catering service companies in the world. Based at Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok – China's second largest airport – it is operated by one of the world's best flight caterers, Cathay Pacific Catering Services (H.K.) Ltd. (CPCS). As well as supplying their own airline, CPCS also increasingly provide catering services for customers of other carriers who value quality, creativity and, above all, CPCS's outstanding levels of process compliance.

As part of the expansion plans for the world's biggest catering facility, the warewasher manufacturer Meiko from the German state of Baden-Württemberg has been selected to equip the new wash-up area for kitchenware and cooking utensils with 13 warewashing machines in an order worth 2.6 million euros. Dietmar Zapf, senior manager and head of Global Key Account Management at Meiko, notes some of the difficulties of this demanding industry environment: “The biggest challenge of this project was getting the processes running fast enough. Airlines are steadily reducing the amount of time their planes stay on the ground, so the timeframe for logistics and material flow is getting shorter and shorter. We're delighted that our technology is capable of meeting these demanding requirements. And we see our cooperation with a customer as prestigious as CPCS as further proof of the quality of products and after-sales service that we offer.”

Eric Waag, who is responsible for day-to-day operations at Meiko's Inflight Catering department, worked closely with the Singapore branch of io-consultants on this project.

Together with one of the most renowned planners and consultants in the industry, Meiko succeeded in convincing the customer that M-iQ technology was the best way forward. “We have kitted out the new wash-up area with innovative M-iQ warewashing machines to clean the kitchenware and cooking utensils, as well as cutlery washers, glasswashers, trolley washers and cabinet washers. Our M-iQ generation of warewashers offers state-of-the-art solutions for low energy consumption, high process compliance and rapid results,” says Waag.

The M-iQ series has recently enhanced its innovation credentials even further with the new GreenEye technology®: “Our latest innovation takes the human factor fully into account in order to further optimize the dishwashing process,” Waag notes. Meiko has developed an intelligent interface design which enables the people and machines involved in the process to work together as an optimum, highly efficient unit. GreenEye technology® enables the machine to actively detect gaps between rows of washware on the conveyor belt. It responds by only activating the rinse function for specific sections of the belt where dishware has been detected – and it can do this while monitoring up to three lines simultaneously. All the gaps on the belt are evaluated with unparalleled levels of accuracy and precision, enabling savings of up to 50 percent in both fresh water and rinse agent.

As soon as the M-iQ is switched on and booted up, the GreenEye technology® begins a dialogue with the operator. A dynamic process bar and status display clearly signal that the machine's functions are fully operational. As well as communicating key process data, the display also draws the user's attention to any deviations or discrepancies, and the M-iQ continues to check all its systems and functions throughout the dishwashing process. “That's what makes the M-iQ more of a warewashing manager than a dishwashing machine,” says Waag. “It speeds up the whole process and makes it even more efficient, plus it neatly encapsulates the philosophy of our partner io-consultants, namely 'Form and Function in Concert'. And of course it also offers major, tangible benefits to our customer CPCS by enabling us to tackle a truly challenging project with outstanding levels of flexibility, performance and cost optimization.”
