The Medica fair held in Düsseldorf, Germany is renowned worldwide as the Mecca of the medical technology industry. From 20 to 23 November, 2013, some 132,000 visitors from all over the world flocked to the Düsseldorf exhibition site, up from 130,000 the year before. The fact that 63 percent of this year's exhibition space was booked by international companies prompted the Medica organizers to relaunch their conference program this year to include a significantly broader international component. The English-language parts of the Medica Education Conference were expanded to include topics such as gender-based medicine, infectology, a conference on military and disaster medicine and the Medica Medicine & Sports Conference for sports medicine specialists. Over half of the visitors to the fair also came from abroad, travelling to Düsseldorf from more than 120 different countries.
Medica has been running for more than 40 years as a specialist exhibition and conference event, with the organizers doing their utmost to tailor its contents to exhibitors' needs. That's why MEIKO, a leading manufacturer of cleaning and disinfection appliances, decided to return to the world's largest medical trade fair this year, too, as MEIKO Managing Director Burkhard Randel explains: "We use Medica as a communication platform for our prospective customers and business partners. We obviously nurture our existing customer relationships throughout the entire year, not just at exhibitions, but it was particularly satisfying to see such a big response to our exhibition booth this year. We made lots of useful contacts and our trade fair team took plenty of interesting feedback back to the office!"
To coincide with a series of lectures under the heading of "Innovative international hospital concepts – evidence-based design, new approaches to patient-focused care", which were held as part of the 36th German Hospital Conference, MEIKO also took along a special issue of its in-house customer magazine "Hygiene for the World". Devoted to the issue of planning, this special issue includes an interview with Prof. Christine Nickl-Weller, who holds Germany's only chair in hospital architecture, as well as a contribution from Leslie Alway, a clinical health planner at the Strategic Health Resources (SHR) planning firm in Melbourne, Australia. She was one of the many visitors to MEIKO's booth at this year's Medica, and she was visibly impressed both by the global showcase of medical technology and the professional presentation of the Offenburg, Germany-based manufacturer of cleaning and disinfection appliances.
After the exhibition Markus Braun, who heads up sales and marketing in MEIKO’s Medical Technology division, expressed his satisfaction with the results. "We made lots of valuable contacts. And we saw that it's just as important as ever to keep drawing people's attention to the critical issues of infection control and hospital hygiene," Braun emphasised, adding: "That was reinforced by the conclusions drawn by Prof. Franz -Josef Schmitz from the Mühlenkreiskliniken hospital group in Minden during the Medica Education Conference in his seminar on infection prevention and control: We can only increase people's awareness and reduce hospital-acquired infections if doctors and care personnel really get to grips with this issue. And as Professor Schmitz emphasised, it's also important to enhance political awareness of this topic."
